Relief Society Message
Dear Sisters,
Half the year is over now and I hope everyone is getting the things done that they said they wanted to get done this year. Last night I attended the homeowners association meeting for The Pines, the community where I live. At the beginning we stood to salute the flag and as we did, I was struck with awe at the great privilege we have to live here in the United States of America! I started pondering about where the great feelings of patriotism have come from in my life.
In the Book of Mormon, in Ether 2:7 to be exact, we are told that his is a land, "choice above all other lands," and that the Lord has "preserved it for a righeous people." I think that our feelings of patriotism come from the teachings we have learned from the gospel of Jesus Christ. The virtues of respect, integrity, loyalty, sacrifice, fairness, and consideration for others are all necessary for effective citizenship in a democratic society. All of these traits are taught in primary, Sunday School, young men and young women activities, and especially Family Home Evening and in the home. We just celebrated the Fourth of July and many of us saw parades and enjoyed picnics. Amidst all of these activities I hope each of us gave thanks to God and renewed our commitment to do our part and to teach our children the necessary democratic principles that we must live by so that we might continue to enjoy our great freedoms.

MAY NEWSLETTER
May Message:
"For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads." (D & C 25:12)
So it is that in the next few months, our Relief Society Precidency's message will be focusing on the church hymns and the power they have to instruct, comfort, and bless us as women. We are admonished to use the hymns in our church meetings, in our homes, and in our personal lives. This music and the words written in them can give us support, direction, and comfort as we pursue our role as Women of Faith. Music is often the first thing we hear as a tiny child, and throughout our life, at important events, the music we hear gives rise to special memories and feelings. Surely, it is an important part of our lives. From the cradle to the grave, it is with us. I know that as sisters, we were those who "shouted for joy" at the Savior's birth, and if we can endure this life, we may sing again with Him, who is our Savior and Redeemer. Righteous music has the power to overcome sorrow and to express happiness. A little sign on my piano reads, "God gives the heart a voice to sound its joy... and calls it MUSIC."
The First Presidency, in our hymn book, encourages us to "...use the hyms to invite the Spirit of the Lord into our congregations, our homes, and our personal lives. Let us memorize and ponder them, recite and sing them, and partake of their spiritual nourishment." Then we will receive the blessings promised.

APRIL NEWSLETTER
Presidency Message:
This month is Easter. When I look at the beautiful spring flowers and feel the warm sunshine, my faith in the Savior is renewed. As I visit with many of you dear Relief Society sisters, there seems to be many troubles among us-- divorce, addictions, excessive debt, wayward children, accidents, sickness, and even death. But I want to give my assurance to you-- you are not alone; others have and are still traveling the same path. The message of the gospel of Jesus Christ should bring us some comfort. And the messengers of the Father and the Son, Jesus Christ, can and will bring each of us gentle, quiet, soothing peace to our souls. I pray for each of us that we will remember the scripture from Joshua 1:5, "I will not fail thee or forsake thee." Please be of good cheer and know that I pray for you daily. Happiness is...
... going to the temple!
Presidency Message:
"Follow the Prophet, Follow the Prophet, Follow the Prophet, He knows the way!" April conference is right around the corner. During conference, we will have the privlege to hear from a living prophet. Through the living propher, we hear the voice of our Savior. Are we prepared to hear His voice and follow His counsel? I pray that we can prepare our hearts and minds to be taught and uplifted. May we be prepared to make any changes that will bring us closer to Him and to be better disciples of Christ.

Presidency Message:
Today is the last day of 2010. Today I attended the temple and as I drove up the road to the Sacramento temple, I reflected on what a miracle it is to have a temple so close to us! I grew up in Sacramento, only about fifteen minutes from where the temple is, and as a youth I never dreamed of having a temple in Sacramento. About three years ago I attended a singles conference and was challenged to "step-up your temple attendance." Each year since that time I have tried to go more than the year before. And so for the year 2011, I challenge each sister in the El Dorado Ward to "step-up your temple attendance." If you do so I promise that you will enjoy a better relationship with your Heavenly Father and feel the presence of the Holy Ghost more in your life. Also you can feel a great peace of mind when your family has been sealed together and you know that that family unit can not be broken by death. It is my hope that for this new year each of you may rejoice in the blessings of the temple.

The focus of the Relief Society theme this month is :
“Find nobility in motherhood and joy in womanhood.”
The family is central to the creator's plan for His children. Women have been given the privilege of helping accomplish that plan of happiness.

The family is central to the creator's plan for His children. Women have been given the privilege of helping accomplish that plan of happiness.
Prophets have been relentless in declaring that the role of homemaker is one of the most sacred, noble and meaningful pursuits possible to a woman.
Pres. Spencer W. Kimball said to the sisters of the Church:
“Each of you should be grateful to be a woman!...to be a righteous woman is a glorious thing in any age. To be a righteous woman during the winding up scenes on this earth, before the second coming of our Savior, is an especailly noble calling. The righteous woman's strength and influence today can be tenfold what it might be in more tranquil times. “
The noblility of this calling from the Lord presents an opportunity to strengthen the family and fill the earth with greater kindness and gentleness, greater love and compassion, greater sympathy and empathy.
Mary Ellen Smoot, former Relief Society General President, said:
”It is time to give ourselves to the Master and allow Him to lead us into fruitful fields where we can enrich a world filled with darkness and misery.”
The Joy that comes from exercising our privileges as a woman cannot be underestimated as the Lord blesses us. With the direction and inspiration of the Spirit our efforts become, ”an Instrument in the Hands of God.”

Zesty Slow Cooker Chicken Barbecue
"Use your slow cooker to prepare this great twist on basic barbecue chicken. Throw the chicken breasts in frozen, and serve with baked potatoes."

Directions
Place chicken in a slow cooker. In a bowl, mix the barbecue sauce, Italian salad dressing, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour over the chicken. Cover, and cooke 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low.

Dear Sisters, on the first Sunday of the month the lesson is going to be on Strengthening our Homes and Families. As I look around at the attack on the family that is happening in our society we probably need several lessons on this topic. " Adultery, divorce, cohabitation, child and spouse abuse, abortion, homosexuality, teen pregnancies, pornography,disobedient children, economic struggles, and increasing unwillingness amont married couple to bear and rear childrennnnn-- all these and more are proof tht the adversary understands very well the central role the family plays in the destiny of God's children."

Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, has counseled and warned us."Satan makes a major effort to destroy the sanctitiy of the family, demean the importance of the role of men and women, encourage moral uncleanliness,...and to discourage parents from placing the bearing and rearing of children as one of their highest priorities.
Even in such circumstances, we need not fear. God is with us. In the end good will conquer evil. In the hear and now, however, we must take our place on the front line in this war that began in the premortal world and do all we can to preserve and protect the sanctity of the family." May the Lord be with us on a daily basis as we strive to strengthen our own home.
